When a woman experiences an abortion, she might initially feel a sense of relief that the situation has changed. But a common, yet often overlooked, part of the experience is the long-term effects an abortion can have on someone.

The feelings a woman might experience after having an abortion range from numbness, anxiety, or depression, to a sense of loss or guilt. She may have recurring thoughts or dreams about the event, struggle with an inability to sustain an intimate relationship, or turn to alcohol or drug abuse. She may even develop severe emotional or psychological problems as a result of the traumatic experience. While post-abortive symptoms can range from moderate to severe, doctors and psychologists are beginning to recognize these signs in women as Post-Abortive Syndrome (or “After Abortion Grief”).

Post-Abortive Syndrome, a form of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), can occur very soon after a woman undergoes an induced, elective abortion, or it may begin showing signs months, or even years, later. Whether she has admitted these struggles to a friend (or even to herself) or not, there is hope for healing. She should not have to bear the emotional, spiritual, and physical pain of her choice alone.
